Determine Old Asphalt Pavement Milling Thickness Based on Pavement Surface Deflection Control
In order to determine optimum pavement milling thickness when old asphalt pavement structure strength deteriorates to some degree, the back calculation method is usually considered. Based on the multi-layer elastic system theory, the change law of the deflection before and after old pavement milling is calculated using the theory of orthogonal design. The change law of the deflection before old pavement milling and old road equivalent rebound modulus after milling is also calculated using the uniform design method. Meanwhile, this paper developed correlations between the deflections before and after old pavement milling for different milling thickness, and the relationship between the deflection before old pavement milling and the old road modulus after milling using regression analysis. The results indicate that the exponential equation usually gives better correlation. When the deflection value before old pavement milling and milling thickness value are small, the difference between the deflection before and after old pavement milling is relatively small. Finally, according to the calculation results, the design criterion of asphalt pavement milling based on the old pavement surface deflection control is proposed. The example indicates that this criterion is simple and reasonable, and has a good practical value, which can provide the basis for the determination of asphalt pavement milling thickness and the design of asphalt overlay.
