Effects of Stormwater Infiltration on the Water Balance of an Urban Area
Intensive infiltration of stormwater changes the water balance and leads to rising groundwater tables. In Northrhine-Westphalia, Germany, stormwater infiltration has created several problems in recent years. Therefore water balances of a real total investigation area are calculated using numerical hydraulic models for the unsaturated as well as the saturated zone. With these models the effects on the groundwater flow and the groundwater level are simulated for different scenarios of infiltration and degree of soil sealing, for example.
