Drilled Shafts Socketed in Uncemented Clay Shale
Rock socketed drilled shafts are being increasingly used in soft rocks such as clay shale to support structures. Due to lack of data and understanding of the drilled shaft behavior in clay shale, in many instances, the design capacity of the rock socket must be verified by performing full-scale load tests on site before installing the production drilled shafts. Hence there is a need to better quantify the performance of drilled shafts in uncemented clay shale. In this investigation, case studies on testing the performance of rock socketed drilled shafts in soft clay shales in Texas over a period of three decades have been documented. A total of eight case studies have been documented including a recently completed study in Dallas, Texas.
