Location of Signs at Tunnel Entrance and Layout Combination of Signs and Markings
Under highway free-flow conditions, 13 male drivers were tested by the UCWin Road Ver.9 driving simulator. Eye movement and motion data were obtained for a 380-m-long short tunnel where three layouts of signs and markings were installed. Through a nonparametric test, (i) the gazes’ characteristics were studied by fixation time; (ii) the speed and position control effect were studied by average speed, 85 percentile speed, standard deviation speed, and lane-changing frequency. The results show that the percentage of fixation time on the road pavement increases during 3 second traveling distance before and after the tunnel entrance while the percentage of the head-up area remains unchanged. Both the red colored pavement and the transverse deceleration markings have speed control effect, but the latter one causes the increase of speed dispersion. The horizontal combination of the speed limit sign and the no-passing zone sign is superior to the vertical combination.
