Hurricane Impacts and Responses, Beaches of Destin and Western Walton County, Florida
Over the last 15 years, several storms have impacted the shorelines of Destin and Walton County, located in the Florida Panhandle. Significant storms include Hurricanes Opal (1995), Ivan (2004), and Dennis (2005), all Category 3 storms when they made landfall less than 50 miles west of the study area. Lying in the most energetic quadrant of the hurricanes' wind fields, the beaches of Destin and Walton County experienced massive beach erosion. This paper discusses the behavior of a continuous, seven-mile beach segment located in east Destin and western Walton County. In particular, it documents the erosion caused by the storms, the beach recovery between storms, the characteristics of a beach restoration project conducted to mitigate storm damage, and the post-construction evolution of the restored beach. Application of a "characteristic profile" method provides additional insights into recent beach evolution.
