Collapse Resistance of Locally Web Damaged Steel Columns
The stability of steel columns that have suffered localized web damage is studied through analytical and computational means. Local web damage can result from either intentional or unplanned events. Recent retrofitting methods to repair column splice welds in pre-Northridge buildings have involved cutting a large portion of the web out. Web damage in steel members exposed to the elements can also occur due to corrosion where the material is weakened to the point of no longer being able to carry the load. While several papers address the issue of holes being intentionally placed in the webs of steel beams, this work does not extend to steel columns where reductions in load carrying capacity could result in catastrophic failure of a structure. This work can aide practicing engineers in assessing the safety of damaged structures.
