Safety Impact on Accesses in Two-lane Highways
On the basis of substantive investigations and data collection which includes the data of highway alignment, traffic volume and accidents, the quantitative impact of the accesses on safety performance of two-lane highways were analyzed. The methodologies such as single factor and multi-factors were used. It is found that the access has significant influence on accident rates, especially on rear-end accident rate. The quantitative results were obtained as well. The number of total accidents, fatal and injury accidents, roadside accidents, rear-end accidents, and collision accidents all increased with the increase of access density. On two-lane highways in mountainous terrain, the total accidents increased by 4.36% and rear-end accidents increased by 11.9% with one unit increase of the access density.
