Liquefaction Case History: Comparing Methods
Seismic liquefaction assessments continue to evolve as the industry continues to refine and improve current analytical methods resulting from additional liquefaction case history data being acquired. However, one area that is still somewhat in its infancy is the effect aging has on the cyclic strength of soils. Several recent studies have been carried out and reported in the literature that conclude aging is a phenomenon that is real. If that is the case, then aging needs to be incorporated into our current liquefaction analysis procedures to avoid the unnecessary high cost of remediation and/or wholesale cancelation of projects. However, questions still arise regarding the details of how aging is specifically incorporated in the liquefaction susceptibility analysis.
