Intragrain Pore Structure of Carbonate Sands
In this study, the internal structure of the individual particles of carbonate sands of both biogenic and non-biogenic nature is investigated using X-ray Micro-Computed Tomography. Pore networks in the internal structure are extracted and quantitatively analyzed. Our results clearly showed that carbonate sand particles have complex internal structures. The biogenic grains have higher internal porosity with minimum of 25% with regular network of interconnected pores, while for the non-biogenic grain, an irregular structure with isolated pores is identified. The internal porosity is only 4% that compared to biogenic grains is at least 6 times smaller. The results of this study can give insights on the breakage mechanism and crushing strength of the individual particles of carbonate sand and consequently their bulk behavior. Also, these results can be used as inputs in the numerical simulations in grain-scale behavior studies.
