Design Features Of The George Washington Bridge Lower Deck
The George Washington Bridge was completed and opened to traffic on October 31, 1931. The original design for this 3,500-ft suspension bridge included provisions for a second or lower deck to be constructed when traffic conditions warranted such a modification. Whereas the original concept contemplated four tracks of rapid transit on this lower deck, the present design will incorporate 6 lanes of vehicular traffic, with provisions for converting the 2 center lanes to 2 rapid transit tracks, if that should become necessary.
This paper examines the design features incorporated in the present structure and the modifications that will be necessary not only to the bridge, but to the New York and New Jersey approaches.
