Behavior of Spliced Steel Girders under Impact
In this paper, the behavior of spliced steel girders under impact loading is investigated. A group of seven steel I-girders (one reference and six spliced) are tested experimentally. Each girder is subjected to impact at mid-span through a specially designed test rig. The test variables are: the connection type for the splice (bearing type or friction-grip type connection), the location and the number of splices along the span, and the falling mass and its height of drop. The impact force-time history applied to the girder, the dynamic deflection (deflection-time history) at different locations, the bending stress-time history at different locations, and reaction-time history are all recorded for each impact test. It is observed from the experimental results that the increase in maximum dynamic deflection is in the range of (6%) to (48%) of that for the reference girder.
