A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This presentation will encourage the use of a hands-on, science and environmental awareness learning program that targets low-income youth in order to develop a constituency for ocean and watershed protection for California's future. Changing demographics in California indicate trends that people most likely unfamiliar with the need for environmental protection will swell our State's population in the coming years. Studies have indicated that low-income populations are the least likely to be touched by environmental education. This presentation will utilize the example of O'Neill Sea Odyssey (OSO), a Santa Cruz-based, free ocean-based education program that focuses on hands-on lessons in navigation, marine biology (plankton) and ecology (watersheds and waste reduction) for 9 through 12 year old youth. Each class undertakes a community service project.
