Geotechnical Investigation of the Melange Foundation of Scott Dam
Efforts to characterize the foundation of Scott Dam over a number of years were complicated by the extremely variable nature of the rock. The dam, located in the Coast Range of California, has a foundation composed of Franciscan Formation melange. Hard pieces of sandstone and shale, referred to as blocks, are located in a matrix of weaker crushed rock. While it was possible to sample and test both the block and matrix material, determining the engineering properties of the entire rock mass required a new approach. To obtain a statistically valid estimate of the block proportion of the dam foundation, a large number of well distributed borings were drilled through the dam spillway and apron. Obtaining undisturbed samples of the fractured sandstone and shale required large diameter borings and very careful drilling and handling procedures, essentially preparing the sample for testing while still in the field. Due to sample heterogeneity, multistage triaxial tests were used to assess the strength parameters of the rock.
