Visible Earthquake Effects and Practical Corrective Measures
Experience bas much to teach about designing for earthquake protection. Widespread shocks, which occurred as long as 140 years ago, are on record; but more recent ones, notably in California, are particularly instructive. They have led to eight criteria for design, most of which are generally accepted. However, renewed emphasis needs to be given to the advantages of structural reinforcing and to the dangers of poor foundations. Even more important is a generous allowance for lateral forces, using coefficients up to 8% g or 12% g. This necessity is proved by structural behavior, both good and bad, in recent shocks-in effect nature's shaking table for full-scale tests. Lacking better evidence, engineers are in duty bound to avail themselves of such practical warnings.
