Use of Digital Photography to Analyze Foil Strain Gages on Geosynthetics
As part of a full-scale, geosynthetic roadway stabilization project, several test sections were reinforced with instrumented geosynthetic materials. As a result, foil strain gages were attached to geotextile and geogrid specimens in the laboratory and tested during a wide width tensile test. An MTS load frame, digital photography, and image processing software were used to calibrate the foil strain gage for each geosynthetic, and compare the localized strain gage response to the imposed strain conditions on the entire test specimen. The experimental configuration, analysis technique, and the conclusions from the study will be discussed in detail.
