Full Circle in Construction Education?
Early American civil engineers received their training through apprenticeships and work experience. Very few had formal education in engineering subjects. Through the 1840s men trained by working in the field were more often than not considered superior engineers to the academically trained engineers produced by the first engineering schools. As iron and steel began to be used in construction a science based future overwhelmed the earlier reliance upon the careful study of previous experience. But an engineer/designer has two duties: 1) to satisfy the needs of the owner and 2) to do so at the lowest practical cost. To satisfy those duties requires that the designer include detailed consideration of the construction process as well as of the completed facility. It is proposed that the real educational issue is how to prepare engineers and constructors to deliver a quality product to an owner.
