Two Cases of Small Earth Fill Dams for Sewage Treatment Ponds in Southern Brazil Brazil
Two sewage treatment systems are described, both in the State of Paraná, Southern Brazil. They involve similar hydraulic lay-outs with oxidation ponds at the end of the process, but were built on different soil profiles. One subsoil is residual from basalt (in the North part of the State) and the other, located in the South, is basically sandstone. The geotechnics of these projects is discussed, including soil parameters, cut, fill, borrow areas, soil substitution, impermeabilization, foundation and slope stability. Some particularities of both job sites are described, showing the importance of apparently simple construction details, and the authors also present comments about the performance of the plants during the past years of regular operation.
