On the Interpretation of Drilled Foundation Load Test Results
In the late 1980s, we proposed a set of consistent criteria for interpreting the results of load tests conducted on drilled shafts under axial uplift, axial compression, and lateral/moment loading. These criteria have been used extensively (correctly and incorrectly) over the past decade. This paper re-examines the axial compression and uplift interpretation criteria (the L1-L2 method), provides additional guidelines and clarifications, and recommends detailed procedures for applying these criteria in a consistent manner. Since that time, these criteria also have been applied to other types of drilled foundations, including augercast piles, pressure-injected footings, and micropiles. The basic interpretation criteria appear to hold for these other foundation types as well, with only small differences. It appears that these interpretation criteria may be appropriate across the full range of drilled foundations.
