Quality Management Systems in the Capital Facilities Delivery Industry: Analysisof Best Practices in Leadership and Third-Party Certification
Quality Management Systems in the capital facilities delivery industry were examined to identify best practices. The research surveyed 118 owner, contractor and supplier firms, performed statistical analysis of the responses, and conducted targeted structured interviews with 17 firms. The survey revealed several statistically significant areas where organizations with self-reported highly successful quality management systems differed from those organizations with self-reported less successful systems. Structured interviews were conducted to examine the practices of successful companies in greater depth. Through a synthesis of the results of the survey, the structured interviews, and a literature review, the research found that organizations with highly effective quality management systems had demonstrable management commitment with adequate resources for effective quality management; capable and consistent quality procedures across the organization; integrated and aligned quality management and project execution processes; effective training; strong partnerships with suppliers and contractors across the project life cycle; metrics that met organizational and project needs; and quality metrics used during all stages of engineering, procurement, construction, and start-up and commissioning. The survey results for leadership and third-party certification are presented here.
