Decision Support for Avoiding Structural Collapses on Refurbishment Projects
There is often a risk of structural collapse on refurbishment projects involving structural alterations, facade retentions and demolition. There is evidence which shows that the construction industry lacks appropriate management systems to cope up with the refurbishment safety risks and hazards. The decisions taken during the refurbishment process not only have an impact on the choice of material, level of safety achieved, but also a direct impact on health, safety and the environment. The domain of refurbishment works is ideal for the deployment of a decision support system as there are numerous safety problems leading to the conclusion that the management and technical solutions often adopted in these projects are inadequate and the required expertise and experience is often not present. This paper presents the development of a generic refurbishment process model based on the `Process Protocol' to identify the various activities during different stages of the refurbishment project. The developed refurbishment process model has then been used for the development of a practical Decision Support System for the project participants involved in a refurbishment project to avoid structural collapses.
