Screening Tests to Limit Geomembrane Strain from Gravel Indentations
Tensile strains from gravel indentations in a 1.5-mm-thick high-density polyethylene geomembrane are reported. Strains were imposed using a single steel probe in test cells that are shown to simulate the mean response of nominal 25- and 50-mm poorly graded angular coarse gravels under vertical pressure. New to the assessment of geotextile protection, the screening tests were conducted at 55°C for 100 h to accelerate creep. Strains were also calculated from the deformed shape of the indentation using a new thin plate method not requiring assumptions that underestimate maximum strain. Additionally, a long-term creep factor recently deduced from time-temperature-superposition was used to account for differences between test and field conditions. Very thick geotextiles were required to limit long-term geomembrane strain to allowable strains of 3 or 6% for 25-mm nominal gravel. None of the geotextiles tested were able to adequately limit strain for the nominal 50-mm gravel.
