How Does Megaproject Social Responsibility Influence Project Performance in China? A Moderated Mediating Model
Megaproject social responsibility (MSR) and innovation are two important determinants to promote sustainable delivery and performance of megaproject. Nevertheless, there have been few, if any, studies discussing the complex relationships between MSR, innovation, and project performance. Motivated by this, this study aims to fill this gap and contribute to a new area of MSR by analyzing relationships between MSR and project performance, considering the mediating and moderating effect of innovation. Various research methods, including questionnaire survey development, sample selection, data collection, and data analysis are employed to analyze four hypotheses, results show that megaproject social responsibility has a positive and significant effect on project performance, and this relationship is partially mediated by innovation. Meanwhile, the stronger the innovation ability is the stronger the relationship between political responsibility and project performance. Those findings provide contributions to the existing studies that have found inconsistent results on the direct and indirect effect of social responsibility and organization/project performance. In practice, megaproject managers can improve project performance by paying more attention to social responsibility and innovation.
