Flexure and Transverse Resistance of Beams
It is well known that materials like cast iron, with an ultimate tensile resistance much less than their ultimate resistance to crushing, show, under transverse strain, reduced to longitudinal strain by the usual formula, much greater tensile strength than when the strains are actually applied in a longitudinal direction. The subject has excited considerable interest for years. It was discussed by this Society in connection with the paper of Mr. L. Nickerson, giving “A record of experiments showing the character and position of Neutral Axes as seen by polarized light,” followed by that of Gen. J. D. Barnard on “Resistance of Beams to Flexure,” and articles in relation thereto containing various theories and explanations, have frequently appeared in the technical journals.
