There is a Lacustrine deposits area in the West of Shanghai and its profile and properties are different from those in the Center of Shanghai. In this paper, the behavior of the pile foundation in the Lacustrine deposits area is studied by the field experimental analysis on a case history of a six-story building. The test results show that the influence of shallow hard soil layers on the behavior of piles is obvious. The actual bearing capacity of pile is about 1.7 times that calculated using Shanghai codes. The observed settlement of a pile foundation is less than predicted value. The interaction between the piles and subsoil is analyzed based on the measured contact pressure under footing. The analysis shows that the bearing capacity of shallow subsoil has been neglected. The actual method for the design of piles in the Lacustrine deposits area should be improved.
