Lateral Drilled Shaft Response from Dilatometer Tests
The procedures used for a successful Class "A" prediction are documented for the lateral load-displacement response of four drilled shafts (d = 0.914 m and L = 11 m) constructed in Piedmont residual sandy silts at the National Geotechnical Experimentation Site (NGES) near Opelika, Alabama. The approach was based on the results of flat plate dilatometer tests (DMT) to evaluate the lateral soil resistance (pu = p0) for determining the static capacity (Hu) and equivalent soil modulus (Es = ED) to represent stiffness within the context of elastic continuum solutions. A more generalized Class "C" approach is discussed using an approximate closed-form expression and data obtained from seismic dilatometer tests (SDMT), since the shear wave velocity provides a fundamental initial stiffness of the ground in terms of the small-strain shear modulus (Gmax).
