Galveston Seawall and Grade Raising Project Located on the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston Island, Texas
The ASCE will recognize the Galveston Seawall and Island Raise as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark on October 11, 2001 at the ASCE Annual National Convention. Galveston Island is a barrier island located two miles off the Texas coast. The island is approximately 3 miles wide at its widest and twenty-eight miles long. The Galveston Seawall extends over ten miles along Galveston's ocean front, protecting life and property against the destructive natural forces of hurricanes and tropical storms. The geographic coordinates of the seawall are 29 degrees 17 minutes north latitude and 94 degrees 47 minutes west longitude. The project is owned by the United States government and Galveston County, Texas.
