A New Generation of Fiber Reinforced Plastic Rebars for Bridge Deck Reinforcement
Advanced fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) composites made of resin impregnated fibers have the potential to become a prominent construction material in lieu of steel bars in the twenty-first century for bridge decks that are susceptible to oxidation when exposed to chlorides. Advances in fabrication, ability for post bending, improvements and consistency in mechanical properties, proper selection and formulation of resins, and strict quality control are some of the issues that make a clear distinction for the new generation of FRP rebars. This paper reviews the design and construction of newly constructed concrete bridge decks reinforced with C-BAR reinforcement. Design and construction techniques are presented with emphasis on the cost effectiveness of using FRP rebars in the concrete bridge deck construction.
