Influence of Membrane Behavior on Contaminant Transport through Geosynthetic Clay Liners
The equivalence of the performance of a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) and a compacted clay liner (CCL) used as landfill bottom liners can be evaluated on the basis of the advective-diffusive transport theory. However, this approach underestimates the GCL performance because the membrane behavior of the bentonite is not taken into account. In this paper, a comparison between GCLs and CCLs is presented accounting for membrane behavior, which is shown to play a relevant role at low salt concentrations (< 10–1 M).
