FEMA's Coastal Construction Manual Update—Flood-Resistant Design
The fourth edition of FEMA's Coastal Construction Manual, published in 2011, provides guidance and current best practices on the design and construction of disaster-resistant residential structures in coastal areas. The fourth edition is an update of the third edition, published in 2000, and is based largely on lessons learned from Hurricanes Charley (2004), Ivan (2004), Katrina (2005) and Ike (2008). The information related to flood design that has been revised or added includes: Descriptions of recent coastal flood events; Updated information on flood hazard identification; Expanded discussion of sea and lake level rise; Updated references to codes and standards; New guidance on calculating wave slam on elevated floor systems; Improved calculations for flood-borne debris impact loads; Improved guidance on foundation scour; Updated and expanded guidance on flood load combinations
