Mitigation Measures for Stability Enhancement of Tailing Dams during Construction
Tailing dams are built in large numbers worldwide to store the massive quantities of tailings produced from mining operations of mineral ores. Due to inefficient design, these dams, which are mostly raised with the upstream method, continue to suffer failure during construction causing fatal accidents, environmental damage, and/or economic loss. In this paper, the effectiveness of three mitigation measures in enhancing the stability of an upstream dam facility with factual impoundment tailings and traditional configuration is examined via transient coupled finite element analyses. The analysis results show that the stability of the tailings dam can be remarkably improved by incorporating sufficient drainage medium in the retained impoundment or by decreasing the raising rate of the facility. The stability improvement brought about by these two measures becomes more pronounced with increasing the height of the dam.
