Mechanical Properties of Polyurethane Grout For Permanent Ground Support Applications
This paper summarizes the findings of a research project that focused on the groutability of coarse granular soils and on the determination of mechanical properties of the grouted mass. The research program evaluated several polyurethane foams and categorized them according to function, workability, cost, and longevity. The results of the investigation show that permeation of the coarse granular soil with certain polyurethane grouts yielded a grouted mass with unconfined compressive strength values of 138 to 483 kPa (20 to 70 psi). However, the compressive strength values showed significant scatter, thus suggesting that presumptive strength values for the grouted mass are not reliable and specific testing must be carried out for each grout type-soil combination. It was also found that the moisture content present in the soil affects the grout reaction yield and the density of the polyurethane foam.
