Structural–Architectural Integration of Double-Layer Space Structures in Tall Buildings
This paper discusses structural–architectural integration of vertical, double-layer space structures in tall buildings. It covers the integration of the structures with building facades, entrances, lobbies, and interior space. As double-layer space structures have not yet been used vertically, their application in tall buildings would be challenging for architects. This is because their structural components and compositions are different from those in other current tall structures. The double-structural layers, which consist of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal members, are located at the building perimeter. This condition requires high-level, structural–architectural integration with other building components. The research reviews structural–architectural integration in current tall buildings and investigates its possible applications in double-layer space structure buildings by showing various alternatives using computer models. Also discussed are view obstructions in double-layer space structure buildings as would normally occur in perimeter structure buildings. The study provides alternatives and guidance regarding the architectural designs of vertical, double-layer space structures in tall buildings.
