Response of Unsaturated Silty Soil under the Constant Loading States during Water Infiltration
Natural slopes and embankments in the unsaturated state fail suddenly during rainfall. Normally, the cause of the failure is considered to be dependent on the decrease in effective stress due to a suction loss at water infiltration. During the event of rainfall, pore water pressure becomes less negative or even positive as a result the shear strength of soil decreases and deformation occur. It is important to examine not only the strength but also the deformation characteristics of the soil. In this study, a triaxial test apparatus was used for examining both the shear strength and deformation behavior of unsaturated silty soil during the course of water infiltration at different levels of deviatoric stress and axial strain by keeping them constant. The test results show that when the soil under shear stress is subjected to water infiltration not only reduction in strength, but deformation caused by water infiltration also occur. Consequently, even if the soil is not failed the significant deformation may hinder the function of soil structures.
