Soft Ground Movement under Small Disturbance of Shield Driving
Based on the shield tunneling practice of Shanghai, a new idea for tunneling across ultra-near utilities in soft ground called "small disturbance construction" (SDC) method is put forward in order to achieve minimum influence of shield driving on earth pressure, pore water pressure and ground movement by very careful adjustment of shield driving parameters. To analyze and predict the characteristics of the ground movement induced by shield tunneling with SDC method across the adjacent underground structures, laboratory tests were conducted to simulate the SDC conditions and the stress path of a point in front of shield face. In-situ test and field measurements were also carried out during construction to study soft soil behavior under SDC conditions and verify the results with laboratory test. Results obtained from laboratory test indicated that soft soil stress path under small disturbance condition is quite different from that under general construction condition. Furthermore, the features of ground movement due to shield driving with SDC method were discovered by field measurement.
