Second Avenue Subway Project, New York: Repair and Refurbishment of Existing Structures Adjacent to Deep Excavations
This paper will highlight examples of the issues and possible solutions associated with constructing deep excavations adjacent to existing buildings in Manhattan for the new Second Avenue Subway. While some of the adjacent buildings are modern high rise buildings constructed on deep foundations, many are 4 to 5 story masonry brick buildings supported on shallow foundations that were built over 100 years ago and are often in poor condition. It will describe the existing geology of the site; methods used to monitor and survey; construction methods used on the project; and the different types of structural strengthening and repair details provided such as masonry, timber, steel and concrete reconstruction, underpinning, reframing and façade tie backs.
