A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
System of Waterways at Chicago, Ill.
Waterways gave the first impetus to budding Chicago, but they in turn have been crowded almost out by the giant they themselves created. Both commercial and health needs combined to stimulate waterway activity. The construction of the Sanitary arid Ship Canal and its smaller predecessor actually reversed the flow in the Chicago River, from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi Valley. Nearby industrial growth a few miles south on the Lake brought about the building of the Calumet-Sag Channel which, like its neighbor, connects with the Illinois Waterway; but it never was an adequate navigation channel. City growth and cross-highway traffic are obstacles to improvement of the earlier canal, whereas, on the newer waterway, clearances both horizontal and vertical throttle traffic. Although there is still the opportunity to meet it, this problem should not be further ignored.
