The discussion of Mr. Fr. von Emperger's paper on “The Development and Recent Improvement of Concrete-Iron Highway Bridges” brought out very clearly that great numbers of tests of the materials entering into building construction have been made, and the characteristics of the materials very accurately determined; yet the subject of floors had received relatively but little attention, and that not of a kind to indicate with any certainty how strong any particular form might be, what the principles were which governed the construction of a floor, or how the materials in use in this country could be so shaped as to develop the maximum of strength with n, minimum of material.
