Global Stability Analysis of Multi-Tiered Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls
The current design of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls requires that the walls be "globally" stable. However, guidelines of the Federal Highway Administration and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials provide only minimal guidance on global stability analyses, especially for multi-tiered MSE walls. Based on a series of analyses for a number of multi-tiered walls designed and built for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), this paper presents a procedure for a global stability analysis of multi-tiered MSE walls using a general purpose slope stability analysis program known as UTEXAS4. Analyses results also reveal the discrepancy between the design approach and analysis methodology.
