Protecting Road Embankments from Overtopping Flow
Research was conducted to evaluate various embankment protection techniques suitable for frequently flooded embankments and recommend the best solutions for a variety of flow conditions. Bituminous pavement, open-cell articulated concrete block, and riprap were three protection options considered. The prototype installations were placed on three different sections of highways. Major flooding was anticipated at these locations in the spring of 2011, so flow depth recorders were installed prior to the flood arrival. Velocity measurements over the embankments were taken manually during the overtopping event. The depth data was used to calculate flow velocities over the embankment using a broad crested weir relationship to calculate flow and a modified Manning's equation to calculate velocity. This research suggests the most cost-effective, low maintenance embankment protection methods are open-cell articulated concrete block and riprap, depending on the anticipated velocities. The highway can be re-opened to traffic as soon as the flood waters recede.
