How to Keep Monumental Stairs from Vibrating
This paper presents a case study of a 39-foot long, curved, conventionally framed monumental stair. The stair experienced considerable vibration issues under normal loading. A retrofit solution was designed and implemented to mitigate the vibrations. Before and after vibration results are included, as well as the design calculations for determining the repair. The paper includes an additional case study of a concrete slab on steel beam framed office building that started to experience vibration problems when the Owner removed steel and glass partitions during a remodel. The design solution, equations, and before and after results are presented.
