Actual and Predicted Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine-Induced Ground Deformation in Washington, DC: Stiff Clays and Dense Sands
This paper presents a detailed analysis of ground deformation that occurred during earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (EPBM) construction through cohesive and cohesionless soils in Washington, DC. Settlements of 25 mm were observed during the first 1,000 m of tunneling, whereafter, settlements reduced to nearly 0 mm for the next 1,000 m. EPBM data suggests shield annulus and tailshield grouting as the cause of the settlement. 3D computational model results, using TBM parameters, matched well with observed settlement.
