River Transportation Development
For present purposes, the scope of this paper is restricted to the transportation of people and commodities on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and the tributaries thereof, and to the era beginning with the discovery of these rivers by the Caucasian race. This period of time, which people today call the “civilized“ era, may be considered to fall into three general, although heavily overlapping, periods, which may be termed the eras of muscle power, steam power, and diesel power.
