Hawaii's Developing Beach Management Program
Shoreline research in Hawaii reveals a disturbing increase in the trend of chronically eroding beaches. The loss of Hawaii's beaches is to some degree related to inappropriate siting of coastal development. As part of a comprehensive beach management effort to address this problem, the state of Hawaii, Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands (OCCL) is currently preparing regionally oriented beach management plans. The plans are intended to address beach conservation and hazard mitigation. The first step is to solve the current problem of ad hoc management and lack of interagency coordination. To achieve this, Hawaii will need to implement regional beach management plans to manage littoral systems as interconnected resources.
