Structural Design Challenges for TKH Complex Project
Three towers, a multiple-activity cultural center, a public plaza and a deep basement, all of unusual geometry, made structural design of the Taikoo Hui — Guangzhou Cultural Plaza Complex an exercise in system selection and optimization that reflected the art of engineering as well as the application of modern technology. This paper presents the numerous structural systems studied, compared and selected to suit the particular demands of each programmatic element of this unique project. 1. Dual lateral structural systems at each of the three high-rise towers use an exterior perimeter moment frame and a core of shear walls. 2. The 29 story hotel tower has a post-tensioned (PT) two way slab system for gravity loads. 3. The Cultural Center theater has steel moment frames with braced frames and transfer girders. 4. The library and public areas of the Cultural Center are designed with concrete moment frames, shear walls, concrete long-span girders, a two-story transfer truss and composite steel frames. 5. Computer models analyzed by the finite-element method were used to study and design the different structural systems. 6. A simplified seismic performance evaluation method was used to predict and evaluate the behavior of the structural system under a severe earthquake.
