Lessons Learned From Civil Engineering Failures
The course described in this paper is a failure class for civil engineering seniors, that has been taught at the University of Kentucky for the past six years. It is an internet-based and student-based learning class that requires independent study outside of lecture. In addition to classical failure cases from every civil engineering sub-discipline, many current failure cases and issues are discussed in class. Student driven group discussions and written and oral presentations are additional components of the course. Through failure case studies, students learn the technical issues, the causes, and modes of failure of various civil engineering constructed facilities. Students also learn the basic procedures of conducting forensic engineering investigation. Ultimately, based on the knowledge gained in the course students become well informed about past experiences and better prepared technically to enter the profession with the capability of successfully facing the challenges that will arise in the 21st Century.
