Actual Seismic Response Control Building with Semi-Active Damper System
We have developed a continuously variable semi-active hydraulic damper that generates the control force up to a maximum of 1000 kN with an external power supply of only 70 watts. This damper was applied to an actual five-story building in 1998. This is the world's first application of the continuously variable semi-active structural control system for large earthquakes. The semi-active structural control system controls a building's response by changing the damping factor of the variable damping components. This paper outlines the developed semi-active damper system and the building to which it was applied. It also describes the control performance of the system based on an evaluation of forced vibration tests conducted after the system was installed, and the seismic observation records.
