Structural Repair of a 42-Inch (1,067 mm) Steel Water Main
Oftentimes projects develop on their own. This is the case for the rehabilitation of the 42" (1,067 mm) steel water main on Huntington Avenue in Boston, MA. During the 1970's minor leaks developed along a section of approximately 500 feet (150 m) of this major transmission water main. Boston Water and Sewer Commission (Commission), the agency responsible for distributing water to 1.5 million customers, mobilized to make the repairs. Upon excavating to determine the extent of the problem, it became obvious that a long-term problem had developed and a short-term solution would be difficult. The water main had extensive external corrosion. Discussions as to the source of the corrosion were the major focus after steel plates were welded to the steel pipe.
