Distribution of Head at a Rectangular Conduit Outlet
Solutions of free-streamline flow with gravitational effect from a two-dimensional conduit have been obtained by the use of a new relaxation procedure. The solutions provide information about the location of the hydraulic grade line at the outlet of a two-dimensional conduit, in addition to furnishing a comprehensive idea of the pressure distribution and the forces at the outlet. The effects on this location of the surface resistance and the geometry of rectangular conduits have been determined experimentally. Means have thus been provided to determine the location of the hydraulic grade line at the outlets of rectangular conduits discharging freely into the atmosphere.
