Continuous Composite Steel and Concrete Beams
The composite steel and concrete beam is used extensively in the construction of highway bridges. It is assumed in the analysis of such bridges that a part of the roadway slab between the adjacent stringers acts in conjunction with the steel beam in resisting the compressive stresses which the positive bending moment produces in the top flange of the beam. For a simply supported composite steel and concrete beam, the top flange is in, compression throughout the length of the beam, and, if more concrete acts with the beam than was assumed, the only effect is added rigidity.
