The term “Lower Mississippi” is indefinite. It sometimes means that part of the stream below New Orleans, La.; at other times, it applies to that part below the Atchafalaya, but, for the purposes of this paper, it will be taken as that part of the river from Cairo, Ill., to the Gulf of Mexico.
